I never really thought I’d ‘draw’ again. Not since I got out of college. I was a good ‘drawer,’ as some folks might say, but it made me a very unhappy person. There was too much pressure to make whatever it was I was attempting to draw look exactly like the actual object. Chasing perfection usually ends poorly. But sketching? That’s different. Studying the lines of a shape or form, and putting that feeling on paper? Oh man. That’s where it’s at. That makes my heart happy. But nobody teaches that in art school. And the pressure isn’t there, because I’m not trying to make it look like anything. I’m trying to make it feel…. the way it makes me feel when I look at that beautifully curled, already fading petal. Or the way the leaves fall dramatically over the edge of the vase. The artful way the florist arranged these delicate beings. The way the lines of the stems interact with each other. The shadows from the vase. The excitement of seeing a new bloom has opened overnight. And maybe the best reason, the joy of thinking of the one who gave them to you.

I don’t sketch or paint or make for perfection. I’m very much against that. Create something that’s you, whether it’s perfect or not.
